Dodging a Bullet by Sketch-Zap Dodging a Bullet by Sketch-Zap
So this is my self-portrait from Art class. It is in oil.
Personally I wish it were better, but I'm never quite satisfied with anything I make. I always notice something wrong. Then again, this is about.... either the third or fourth serious self portrait I've ever done, first one in oil. I've worked with oils before though, so at least I had that while making it.
I don't like the earring. It was supposed to emphasize the gravity of the picture, but I had troubles with it and it ended up just being a distraction. This thing also needs more texture, better contrast, and such.
It also should have been more creative. The pose is boring. The background barely suffices.
This was hard for me to do because I don't like painting or drawing myself. There are so many other things out there that have more... what is it... je ne sais quoi. I was excited for this, but I never really liked looking at myself in the mirror, and unfortunately that's what you do with self portraits.

Please critique! I need to get much better at all this, so please please please help me learn.
Don't steal this please. You'd basically be stealing my face, which I of all people have obvious rights to it. Please don't make me put the watermark on there.

Why thank you! That's really kind of you to say! I've cut my hair since then... should be making another oil self-portrait in a few months in art class. I'm really looking forward to it. Thanks for your compliments! :iconsupertighthugplz:

This is amazing! Your so cute and pretty! OMG >u<

We have never done an oil painting before so our critique wouldn't be much of help ;w;. You did a superb job as far as we can tell.

Thank you!! HAha someone else said this was cute too.
Oil painting isn't terribly hard one you understand how to work it. I've done i tfor awhile, so I'm familiar with it.

Use layers with your turpentine. Go thin to think, and don't paint straight on the white. Make a monochromatic brown painting underneath it first.

Yeah it really helps. You don't have to worry about where everything is then once you start coloring.

In my opinion, the contrast looks great, and I love the texture of the hair. And you did a wonderful job on the shading!

Thank you! If you want to paint, paint. I'd suggest acrylics first though. They don't stain as bad and you don't have to deal with turpentine.

I agree that it could use more contrast. I don't know why the crack is up in the top right (I am assuming this is an image of you looking into a cracked mirror) perhaps to make it more interesting the crack could have extended over to your face a little. Since you seem to be dressed like Freddy Krueger, maybe you could have make a more menacing expression and try to paint some burn scars on your face but not too much because you don't want to ruin that pretty face :D.

Overwall, the painting is very beautiful and extremely well done. I have never used oils before but some have told me it can be a pain to work with but you have done this like an expert!

Thanks for the critique. It's funny that you say that the crack should have been over my face, and to tell you the truth, I somewhat agree. It'd make it more unified and such. When I told my Dad about the crack though, he asked worriedly, "Is it over your face?"
I was trying my best to get a kinda worried look to it, but in the end it looked like I was just smirking. Ah well.
Oils can be a pain, but if you work slowly, you get there. Thank you very much!

Aw, thanks! *hugs back* I always work on the eyes too much. When I'm in the middle of painting, the eyes are usually well done, and meanwhile the rest of my painting is half as developed as the eyes, ahah...
